Jennifer Lopez is the big Hollywood star of “The Mother”, a Netflix production currently being filmed in Gran Canaria.
Along with costars Gael García Bernal, Joseph Fiennes and Omari Hardwick, and boyfriend Ben Affleck, Lopez has travelled all over the island to film scenes for the thriller which is actually set in Cuba.
We thought it would be fun to look at all the locations used to film “The Mother” in Gran Canaria so you can recognise them when the film comes out.
Monte Leon
In “The Mother”, J.Lo plays an assassin who has to come out of hiding to protect her daughter. Several scenes were filmed at a luxury property in the enclave of Monte Leon up in the hills behind Campo Internacional.
This spot, with its beautiful country landscapes and villa and mansion properties should be easy to recognise because it is unique in Gran Canaria.
Vegueta
Old Town Las Palmas doubles up as a Cuban city in “The Mother” with scenes filmed by the Casa de Colón museum and in several cobbled streets.
It may be hard to identify Vegueta in the movie because a lot of coconut palm trees were put along its streets to make them look and feel more like Habana.
Alameda de Colón and the Gabinete Literario
With its eclectic facade and grand interior, the Gabinete Literario building in Las Palmas is a popular choice with film and television crews in Gran Canaria.
Scenes from “The Mother” were filmed here and just over the road in the Alameda de Colón plaza with its huge fig trees and tall palms.
The Jardín de La Marquesa
A private tropical garden in Arucas, the Jardín de la Marquesa provided the luxuriant tropical background to scenes from “The Mother”.
The gardens are open to the public should you want to go and find exactly where the scenes were filmed.
San Telmo and Calle Canalejas
The plaza at San Telmo with its Modernist Cafe, and nearby Canalejas street with its elegant old buildings and facades were also used by the film crews working on “The Mother”.
Calle Canalejas is the backdrop for a motorbike chase in the film.
Arteara, Fataga
The Arteara barranco just below Fataga is home to one of Gran Canaria’s largest palm groves making it an exotic setting for scenes from “The Mother”.
The dense growth of big palms and steep valley walls should be easy to spot in the film.
El Berriel
The El Berriel airfield just north of Bahia Feliz doubled up for the military base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba during the filming of “The Mother” in Gran Canaria.
San Juan
The multi-coloured barrio of San Juan just next to Vegueta in Las Palmas features in “The Mother”. Scenes were filmed around the abandoned military garrison called the Bateria de San Juan.
Meloneras
The area around the Expo Meloneras conference centre at Meloneras was a base for film crews working on “The Mother” with actual scenes filmed in the area.
